The paperback version of The Morgue and Me is being published by Speak, a Penguin imprint started in 2002 that has put out a ridiculous number of classic books -- The Westing Game, by Ellen Raskin (which is sitting high on my to-be-read list right now), Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider books, and Postcards from No Man's Land by Aidan Chambers to name a few.

Paging through the catalog, I spotted a couple of other fall Speak titles that look pretty great:

Hold Still, by Nina La Cour: You can consider me biased on this one, since although I've never met Nina, we share the same literary agent and blog together at the Crowe's Nest. But the people who give out the William Morris Award aren't biased, and they singled out Hold Still as one of the best YA debut books of 2009. Anyway, here's the catalog copy:

"In the wake of her best friend Ingrid's suicide, Caitlin is left alone, struggling to find hope and answers. When she finds the journal Ingrid left behind for her, she begins a journey of understanding and broadening her horizons that leads her to new friendships and first love. Nina LaCour brings the changing seasons of Caitlin's first year without Ingrid to life with emotion, honesty, and captivating writing."

Trance, by Linda Gerber: All I really know about this book is that people were grabbing for advance copies like mad when I stopped by the Penguin booth at this summer's ALA. And the premise has me intrigued:

"Ashlyn Greenfield has always known when bad things are going to happen. Each time that familiar tingling at the back of her neck begins, she knows what's to come--a trance. She's pulled in, blindsided, an unwilling witness to a horrible upcoming event. It's the site that, using some kind of complicated algorithm, can analyze a selection of your writing and tell you which famous author you write like. I say you've already heard about the site because it has been visited 1,000,000 times by now.

Anyway, being as vain, naturally curious, and insecure as most writers, I had to check it out.

I asked the site to analyze some selections from my current work in progress, about which I am very excited. While the contents of that work in progress are top secret, I can let you in on this much: it's told from multiple perspectives, including that of a young man and a young woman. I gave the site four different chapters to analyze, two of them coming from the young man's perspective, and two from the young woman's.

For each chapter coming from the young man's perspective, the site told me that I write like . . . drumroll please . . . Cory Doctorow. Sweet! Considering that I loved Little Brother, and that the super-secret work-in-progress has certain thematic similarities with that book, I'm a big fan of this result.

For each chapter coming from the young woman's perspective, the site told me that I write like . . . drumroll please . . . Margaret Mitchell. Again, sweet! Considering that Gone With the Wind sold over 30 million copies and earned Ms. Mitchell the Pulitzer Prize in 1937, I'm a big fan of this result as well.

Now, as great as the whole "I Write Like" idea is, and as much fun as it is for us authors, there are two things that I particularly, umm, like about it. First, the site detected a distinct difference in writing style between the sections told from the young man's perspective and those from the young woman's perspective. The two characters have much different voices -- or, well, they're supposed to -- and I'm taking the "I Write Like" results as a small confirmation of success on that front.

(Aside: you know how certain actors seem to play themselves regardless of what qualities their characters are supposed to have, while others, like Meryl Streep, disappear into their roles? When you're writing from a particular character's perspective, it's sort of like you're trying to inhabit a role. I'm taking this "I Write Like" thing with a grain of salt, but the fact that the site found one character's passages different from the other's suggests the two "roles" feel distinct. Hooray!)

Second, with respect to each character's two passages, the results were identical. So, I'm taking this as a small indication that each voice is consistent. To go back to the acting analogy again, I suppose this means I didn't, like, suddenly lose my southern accent halfway through the movie.

Check it out for yourself and see who you write like . . .

John C. The first is from Liz V. of the Capital Area District Library, who has also done a video review of Laurie Halse Anderson's Wintergirls. The aspiring artists were asked to create cover art for one of six classic Penguin novels. And the challenge came with a very cool reward: the winning design (by contestant John, for his take on The Time Machine by H.G. Wells) is actually being put into production.

I missed the episode, but loving the art of book covers as I do, I was eager to scour the Internet for pictures of the contestants' entries. As I did, something seemed a little off.

It was this entry in particular that caught my eye. It's a cover for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by a contestant named Nicole:

It may be difficult to see at this scale, but the silhouetted image is that of a female figure falling through space. Now, I don't love this cover in its totality, but the image is quite arresting.

Something about it, though, gnawed at me. And then I remembered:

This is the cover art for The Girl Who Fell From the Sky, a debut novel from Heidi Durrow released in mid-January to widespread praise. I put this my reading list some time ago--part of its appeal being the striking cover art.

I'm loathe to speculate too much here, as I have no idea how the Bravo contestant came up with her design, how she executed it, or even when the episode was taped. Yet, at first glance, it would appear that the two designs share significant similarities. The female form in the "Alice" cover is facing the opposite direction, does not appear to have braids, and seems to have her legs positioned differently. But at the conceptual level--a stark, silhouette image of a female form falling in free space--well, they appear nearly identical.

Did I miss anything in the episode that explains this?

UPDATE: Nicole herself has chimed in with a comment, explaining that her design was entirely original. I have absolutely no reason to doubt her. Apparently, this is just a case of two talented artists traveling down similar paths (or rabbit holes, as it were). Case closed on this one.

John C. Instead he discovers a murder cover-up that points to town officials and close friends. As he works to discover whodunit, the plot thickens with bribery, blackmail, murder, and revenge. With everyone suspect, and danger deepening, it seems that the only person Christopher can trust is Tina McIntyre, an insanely hot, brazen reporter who wants to boost her career with a killer story. Together they might discover the truth, but at what cost? Ford makes his debut with a solid mystery infused with dry wit, but it’s his likable, quirky detectives and their crackling chemistry that make The Morgue and Me anything but stiff.

"Anything but stiff" -- ha. A cool experience to be sure, though I'm not sure I'm processed it sufficiently to write about yet.

For now though, I have to tell you at least one cool factoid, which is this: those cameras on the right and left aren't operated by cameramen. They're, like, ROBOTS. I think they're remote controlled from another room, but it's somewhat freaky to see these large cameras moving all around the set on their own during the broadcast.

Anyway, before I link to the interview, let me tell you something. Watching yourself appear on tv is like hearing a recording of your own voice -- you know, where the sound of your voice makes your skin crawl a little bit and you're like "do I really sound like that!???" -- only TEN TIMES WORSE. So, yeah, it's sort of painful for me to watch this, but WBAL anchor Kate Amara was awesome and I'm so glad they asked me on the show!

The WBAL interview!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jcfphotosandnews.blogspot.com/2009/07/wbal-weekend-edition-or-my-tv-debut.html' title='WBAL Weekend Edition! list. It appears there is a proposal to replace that list, heretofore selected by tireless librarians who scour the landscape for BBYA-worthy titles, with a list generated by a poll of readers. Nothing against democracy here, but I'm leery about this idea at best, given the inevitable tendency of a popular poll to overlook hidden gems.

My own opinion on the matter is less important than that of Cindy Dobrez and Liz Rutan and author Alex Flinn. Both of the posts explain, quite convincingly, why it would be wise to keep the BBYA list as is. Well worth reading.

On the topic of ALA, congratulations to Melina Marchetta, who will be accepting the Printz Award for Jellicoe Road. I'm about a quarter-way through it right now, and it's sort of blowing me away.

And finally, on the topic of ALA, things worth reading, things that have blown me away recently, and Printz Awards, I direct you to John Green's 2006 Printz Award acceptance speech. My God. Just read the thing, seriously.

I realize that singing the praises of John Green is not exactly a novel endeavor, but I also noticed that his blog post with his 2006 speech has only six comments underneath it. I hope it's not lost among the vast repositories of jokes, provocative thoughts on publishing, and dubious home-cooking videos that the inimitable Mr. Green has filed away on the Internet. Because this 2006 speech is amazingly good. To anyone who values YA literature, writing, libraries, or articulate thinking about the above, it's a treasure.

John C. I could! Turns out they totally let you buy books from the UK. You have to pay an abnormally high shipping fee (I think it was like $8 to get Still Midnight to DC), but I was happy to do it in this case.

I'm not sure where I got the idea that this was impossible to do, but it was firmly fixed in my mind. Anyway, for any of you who are desperately desiring a book from UK that hasn't been released in the states yet, go ahead and pick it up from Amazon UK.

John C. It may be housed in the young adult section, but Christopher's summer stint as an intern in the Michigan morgue jump starts a throwback-style detective novel that readers of all stripes should pay attention to. There is blackmail, cover-ups, misunderstandings with best friends about taking relationships to the next level, families in danger and secrets -- a plethora of them. There's also a scenery-chewing sidekick journalist named Tina whom I hope to see return in future novels. And there's a chance to get in on the ground of what looks to be a promising career in crime fiction -- regardless of bookstore classification.

This review also appeared in The Baltimore Sun, The Orlando Sentinel, The Morning Call, and The Daily Press.

Next, I was thrilled when the New York Post picked The Morgue and Me as one of its "Hot New Titles for Tweens and Teens":

A teen takes a summer job at a morgue, only to discover a murder cover-up and a blackmail ring. Naturally, he stumbles across something he shouldn't—$15,000 in cash and a dead body that the medical examiner has ruled a suicide, even though the body had been shot five times in the torso. Certain that the medical examiner and the sheriff are connected, Christopher starts to investigate alongside Tina, a sexy young reporter for the local paper. The plot covers a wide range of characters, including Christopher's ex-neighbor (and crush), Julia; her police officer older brother, Tim; the town's mayor and his daughter; and Christopher's best friend, Mike, an amateur bookie. Christopher and Tina uncover interlocking mysteries involving blackmail, corruption and murder, which span years of the town's history. Ford spins a tale that's complex but not confusing, never whitewashing some of the harsher crimes people commit. The result is a story that holds its own as a mainstream mystery as well as a teen novel.

Then there was a great review in Armchair Interviews.

Booklist chimed in with a very nice write-up, and Kirkus recommended The Morgue and Me for larger library collections. Neither of these, unfortunately, are linkable.

Most recent with the review from the Bulletin for the Center for Children's Books, which I've already mentioned.

Phew, now we're all caught up.

John C. Candy, the recent smash from Lauren Conrad of The Hills fame.

But this isn't right. First, though I wasn't a fan of A Million Little Pieces, and setting aside the controversy relating to it, the fact is the guy wrote a book that tons of people liked, including one Oprah Winfrey. So, on some level, his writerly chops are legit.

Also, even if you view the James Frey project--titled "I Am Number Four"--as a kind of "celebrity" deal, there's no value in being jealous of his star status and/or bemoaning the fact that his book will be taking up space that would otherwise be occupied by a "real author." I would explain why this is so, except that the wonderful Adrienne Kress (Timothy and the Dragon's Gate) has already done so. So, if you need some cheering up/calming down about this type of thing, I direct you here post haste. Read Adrienne's take; like most things she writes, it'll do your soul some good.

Meanwhile, I'll be hoping that "I Am Number Four" proves to be a great read.

John C. That's right, it was the author copies of The Morgue and Me, my first novel, which is coming out on June 25th. Opening this box was actually kind of a big moment in my life -- I felt like a real live author.

But then it got better, because this week I discovered that the Barnes & Noble in Springfield, Virginia (responding to insatiable demand, probably), had shelved copies of my book a wee bit early. So naturally I drove there at like 9:30 on a Sunday night.

Dudes, that's the book I wrote. On a book shelf. In a book store. Seeing this was a crazy-cool feeling.

Okay, so to wrap this up: (1) I wrote a book called The Morgue and Me; and (2) if you live in Springfield, VA, you're incredibly lucky because Barnes & Noble already has it in stock. The rest of you have to wait until Thursday.

John C.
